The sky’s no limit as the author-illustrator of The Dot and Ish winds up his Creatrilogy with a whimsical tale about seeing the world a new way.

Marisol loves to paint. So when her teacher asks her to help make a mural for the school library, she can’t wait to begin! But how can Marisol make a sky without blue paint? After gazing out the bus window and watching from her porch as day turns into night, she closes her eyes and starts to dream. . . . From the award-winning Peter H. Reynolds comes a gentle, playful reminder that if we keep our hearts open and look beyond the expected, creative inspiration will come.

Though this is an older book, if you haven’t read it yet, it’s well worth picking up. In fact, I will probably review most of the books in the Creatrilogy series. I feel Reynolds subtly touches on lots of important topics. If you can’t tell yet, I love this guy and his mission to help kids.

But on to this review . . .

My Thoughts

Marisol is a true artist; she is famous for her creative clothes, her box of art supplies, and her belief that everybody is an artist. So when her teacher says the class is going to paint a mural for the library, Marisol is anxious to get started. She agrees to paint the sky while other students paint fish and the ocean.

But to Marisol’s dismay, she discovers that there isn’t any blue paint in the paint box. Now, what?

This is a sure way to catch a child’s attention, and it did mine, too. How will Marisol work through her problem?

It’s a story that’s both interesting and shows creativity. Plus, anytime a person thinks a bit outside the box, it opens a wonderful opportunity for discussions. And that’s always a plus.

My Mission

illustration of a boy reading a book entitled peter's storyWhen I was in 7th grade, something remarkable happened that changed my life in a wonderful way. An amazing teacher, Jim Matson, pulled me aside for drawing in class, instead of paying attention. Rather than scolding me, Mr. Matson asked me to try a project, tapping into art and storytelling to help other students understand a math concept.

Dizzy with excitement, I ran off to make a comic book. I cracked open the dense math text book and saw, for the first time, that these numbers were only ways of quantifying things and actions. Things and actions I could see and put to paper. When I brought in the completed project, Mr. Matson didn’t just see a comic book, but also a storyboard. “You’ve got the beginnings of an animated film if you’re interested.” A few months later, I had finished my first animated film designed to teach. And now I do the same professionally through my stories, films and the company I founded, FableVision.

My journey has been dedicated to helping kids, especially the “off the path” kids. I was one of them myself. Not every student is lucky enough to have a teacher, or adult, see his or her potential.

When I visit students in schools they ask me what my hobbies are. I say thinking, dreaming. If my art and stories can help inspire others to do the same, I’ll feel my life had meaning.
