Book Description:
Mental labor, or the mental load, involves the many — and extremely
varied — tasks that are involved in managing a household and/or
workplace. This topic has exploded over the past couple of years,
especially for women. As stated in an October 2017 Washington Post
article, “The constant stress of trying to stay organized — and to
remember to execute so many tasks every single day — is affecting
women’s relationships with their spouses, children, friends, and
colleagues. They are experiencing mental, emotional, and physical
fatigue trying to stay on top of it all.”
Lighten Your Mental Load shares real stories of what
this load is like for both men and women across the globe and how it
originated. It offers practical advice on how to lighten this burden
through technology and other methods in the following areas:
• Home
• Shopping and Meals
• Marriage/Partners
• Children
• Pets
• Transportation
• Career
• Birthdays, Celebrations, Holidays, and Vacations
• Volunteering, Church Activities, and Hobbies
• Caregiving
• Retirement
Finally, the book discusses ways to not add to the mental load of others
and how we can more evenly distribute the mental labor between both
sexes for future generations.

GUEST POST by Amy
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
I was inspired to write my last two self-help books through both a mistake and losing a job!
I signed up to take a course in the summer of 2017 on how to get a book published. Little did I know that it was for a non-fiction book – I considered myself to be a novelist. I could have canceled and gotten my money back, but while walking my dogs one evening, I started thinking about my job with the City of Noblesville, Indiana.
I had been with the city for nine years before being told in November of 2015 that my job was being eliminated. I had been a successful grant coordinator for the municipality and implemented many programs to bring good publicity to Noblesville. This news came out of nowhere and devastated me. I wasn’t ever told why this happened, either!
Fortunately, this event led me to become an independent grant consultant, which is my day job now. I’m now happier than I ever have been in my entire career.
When I left the city, I heard from countless people how glad they were that I had done things differently than others to bring joy to their lives. On that walk with my dogs I thought “I could write a book on bringing joy to the workplace!” That led to my first self-help book, Joy to You and Me! (At Work).
After that book had been published and promoted, I thought about writing another novel, but the self-help bug wouldn’t leave. The topic of the mental load also intrigued me. Here was something millions around the globe were battling, but no one had written a book on how to relieve it. After a fruitless search on the Internet one evening, I thought, “Hey, I could write one!”
Finally, I think I get most of my inspiration from God. It’s crazy how I’ve been doing absolutely nothing in the past and how an idea will just pop into my head out of nowhere! I thank Him for that often.

Thank you for hosting my book today! I hope it helps millions lighten their mental loads.
I do too, Amy. It sounds like the perfect book, especially with everything that’s going on right now.
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful story. Yes, god does have a plan for all of us and it’s amazing where he’ll take us if we just let him.
Thanks, Lauren, I agree.
