USA Today bestselling author Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Sensationalist spin? No – Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.

Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.

Though you wouldn’t have to read/listened to the previous story in this series, Revel: The Twelve Dancing Princesses, this story follows that and references  some of those characters. And since I’ve just listened to the last, Cinderella, I can say that it too has a few characters from earlier stories. So bottom line, if you plan on listening to this series, I’d recommend beginning with the first story. It’s not necessary but might be nice to recognize characters from previous fairytales.

Once again, I enjoyed Carlton’s imagination in this retelling of The Little Mermaid. It still takes a little time for me to feel comfortable with the narration, but it seems to work especially well for reading fairytales.

My Concerns

Like the previous audiobook in this series, I was somewhat lost in the reasoning to toss sexual content into this story. And that’s how it felt. Randomly included. These retellings haven’t felt like love stories, which might merit sexual content, but rather a bit crude additions to the tales. In each case I rated down only because of this. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the stories.

Another concern was that the ending felt a bit rushed.

What I Like Best

The stories I’ve listened to, including this one, show a remarkable ability to reimagine fairytales in an interesting way. I liked this one even more than the previous book in this series, and it was good too.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Demelza Carlton. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
