This is the second book in the Harper McClain series, the first being The Echo Killing.
Naomi Scott, a law student who works part-time as a bartender to help make ends meet, is found dead in
the heart of an affluent district. One of the main people the police want to question is Naomi’s boyfriend who they’ve discovered has a criminal background. However, he can’t be located. Due to several tips, Harper finds that Naomi’s boss and the district attorney’s son are people of interest as well.
While dealing with Naomi’s murder Harper receives information regarding the unsolved murder of her mother 16 years earlier, which she has been trying to work through.
As the investigation progresses both by the police and reporter Harper McClain, bits and pieces of the first book, The
Echo Killing, become woven into this story. We learn that there is a previous relationship that Harper is dealing with as well as the feeling that someone is continuing to watch her. Someone familiar, but dangerous.
My Thoughts
What Concerned Me: Like most books in a series, I think it would have added more depth to this story to have read the first book.
On the same note, while this is a stand-alone book it does leave you with unanswered questions, as I’m sure the first book did. If that will bother you, just realize you may have to keep reading this series to finally get everything tied up neatly!
Also, even though the book is classified as a thriller, I would be more apt to label it a good, solid mystery.
What I Liked Most: This an interesting story complete with a believable cast of characters that seem worthy of following.
Thank you to NetGalley, Christi Daugherty, and Minotaur Books for an advanced copy. I enjoyed the opportunity to be able to review this and give my honest opinion.
