Doerrfeld book about sadness

– How To Cope With A Catastrophe –

Praise For Older Books

Publisher’s Synopsis

A moving and universal picture book about empathy and kindness, sure to soothe heartaches big and small.

When something sad happens, Taylor doesn’t know where to turn. All the animals are sure they have the answer. The chicken wants to talk it out, but Taylor doesn’t feel like chatting. The bear thinks Taylor should get angry, but that’s not quite right either. One by one, the animals try to tell Taylor how to act, and one by one they fail to offer comfort. Then the rabbit arrives. All the rabbit does is listen . . . which is just what Taylor needs.

With its spare, poignant text and irresistibly sweet illustration, The Rabbit Listened is about how to comfort and heal the people in your life, by taking the time to carefully, lovingly, gently listen.

My Thoughts

Little ones should be able to relate to this wonderful story. Taylor builds a beautiful tower, but when a flock of birds fly over and knock it down Taylor is not a happy camper.

And like most of us, his animal friends want to help make him feel better. Chicken offers to help him talk it through. Of course, the bear suggests they shout it out. Then his elephant friend suggests they remember how it used to be.

Each animal offers a different, and animal appropriate, idea. And each falls on Taylor’s deaf ears. Nothing is going to work for him. Until . . .

a cute little bunny shows up.

What Concerned Me

Nothing at all.

What I Liked Most

Such a cute book for both kids and adults. The illustrations are priceless and each suggestion an animal makes feels like it’s so appropriate. As an example, the hyena suggests they just laugh about the problem.

It offers such a great method of dealing with sadness without ever feeling didactic.

If by some chance you’ve missed reading this book, it’s time to pick it up. You won’t be disappointed.
