Thoughts

Labyrinth of Lies is book two in the Triple Threat series, the first book being Point of Danger. Both books can easily be read as standalone novels since the tie to the books is three sisters. The first novel is about Eve, and this is one is about Cate.

Cate Reilly is a detective in the St. Louis Country PD who is asked to go undercover to help solve a girl’s disappearance. Though she isn’t fond of going undercover, she is promised this will be the last time she is asked to. So, with that, she is off to an exclusive girls’ boarding school, hoping to act and look the part of a student.

She is shocked to discover her once boyfriend DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) Agent Zeke Sloan is also undercover at the school as a Spanish teacher. But since they departed years ago under less than favorable terms, it may take a lot for them to combine forces in an attempt to solve the two possibly related cases.

Though this was an enjoyable story, the mysteries of the girl who disappeared and the DEA’s involvement in busting a drug ring take a backseat to the relationship of Cate and Zeke. The mystery is rather simple and fairly easy to work through, so that leaves an enjoyable but slow paced story. It did pick up toward the last, but the suspense was offered at the expense of believability.

Though I was excited about a girls’ boarding school being the setting, there was little description or feel of it, other than Cate having a roommate.

My Concerns

The mystery felt a little elementary and not as engaging as I would have liked.

One incident toward the end felt completely unbelievable, imagine trying it yourself and you’ll understand. Though I’m offering no spoilers, I think you’ll know what I’m referring to if you read this.

Final Thoughts

Though I had no trouble finishing the book or enjoying it, I wasn’t really hooked enough to recommend it highly. It was good. Just not great.
