Despite Grace’s best efforts, she finds it incredibly difficult to build a happy life with him. The ultimate revelation leads to a showdown with Narcissus. Grace believes the well-being of others depend on what she must reveal.
René is an author, playwright, poet and publisher/editor. She is a seasoned business owner, private coach and ministerial leader. Grace Under Siege is her debut novel. She and her spouse live in Georgia. She is a graduate of Georgia State University.
Interview:
Debbie: What inspired you to write Grace Under Siege?
René: I found myself at the end of my rope in a relationship that I believed was forever. A professional helped me to identify the source of my distress. I began to research and visit blogs to discover that I was not alone. There is a silent city of men and women who had my experience. So I wanted to write an entertaining and educational novel to bring awareness to narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
Debbie: What is the key message?
René: It’s about awareness for victims and their family or friends who did not believe their stories and awareness and understanding for sufferers.
Debbie: How did you come up with the title, Grace Under Siege?
René: I brainstormed several titles with my team. What Grace Must Reveal and The World’s Best Kept Secret are other titles we considered. I wanted a title that bespoke my main character’s unusual circumstances and chose Grace Under Siege.
Debbie: How did you prepare to write your novel?
René: I spent hours reading articles and books such as Will I Ever Be Free of You? K. McBride, Disarming the Narcissist W. Behary, and Will I Ever Be Good Enough? K. McBride. I spent days on the blogs reading the online accounts of other men and women who had encountered someone with a personality disorder. After my research, I then wrote an outline using 3 x 5 cards, placing them on the floor to create a mind map of how I would tackle this realistic fiction.
Debbie: If you had to describe your protagonist in three words, what would they be?
René: My main is named Grace. I’d say she is initially naïve yet confident and intelligent.
Debbie: If Hollywood wanted your book for a movie, which celebrities would star in it?
Rene: Will Smith, Winston Duke, Tracee Ellis Ross, Kerry Washington, Gabrielle Union, Michael B. Jordan, and Viola Davis
Debbie: Well, that is undoubtedly a blockbuster cast of actors and actresses! Will there be a sequel? If so, leave us with a short cliffhanger.
René: Absolutely! The sequel to Grace Under Siege will pull out all the stops: 1) Who killed Grace’s best friend? 2) Who is the next undercover narcissist? Is the person a male or female? Stay tuned.
