My Thoughts
My first thoughts when I looked at the pages and the fact that this is a board book were conflicted. A board book made me think of very young children. Yet the content didn’t seem for the VERY young.
Then I came in through a different door. Well, it does introduce young children to new words and a brief explanation is presented. This is all in the form of an alphabet book.
I got it! Certain words are crazy hard to comprehend. But I realized it’s getting familiar with them that is the important part.
Yes! I began to love this STEM book which is for ages 3 – 7. Here is an example of one of the pages:
D is for DNA
DNA is what makes you unique.
The picture is of various children: a white boy, a black girl, an Asian girl, and a blind boy. In the middle is a figure that represents DNA.
The illustrations are colorful and exceptionally child-friendly.
So my end thought is that this book is VERY good for VERY young children and up!
If you’re looking for a wonderful STEM book for the classroom or home, this would be a perfect addition. It presents an awareness of most likely unfamiliar words without ever overloading a child with details.
Bravo! Christi Sperber.
My thanks to iReadBookTours and the author for a copy of this book. My review and rating are only my opinions, of which I was free to post.

Meet Christi Sperber with Author Interview
When Christi Sperber was pregnant with her first daughter, Emma, she wanted to add STEM books to Emma’s bookshelf. But the Mom who has a Master’s in Chemistry noticed that there weren’t many chemistry-related books available for babies and toddlers. The few that did exist, she noticed, weren’t factually correct. That’s when Sperber had an idea: launch her own publishing company – Nanoscale Scientists Publishing LLC – to introduce young kids to the wonderful world of science at an early age.
How did you do research for your alphabet books?
First, I make a list of common concepts and words found in the particular science subject I am writing about, chemistry for example. I then choose which concept/word I like best for each letter of the alphabet. After, I look through my old textbooks and reputable science websites for information about that one concept – I usually read at least ten different sources for each word – and write down notes from each one which is usually 1-2 full pages of notes. I then dwindle all those notes down into a couple of sentences. It is the most time-consuming part of the writing process but I feel it is key to producing a great book.
What made you write a book about chemistry?
I wrote the books for my daughters. I majored in chemistry in college and got an advanced degree in it – I also married a chemical engineer – so science is in their bones. I wanted to add STEM books to their bookshelf, but I found that there were not many chemistry-related books available for babies and toddlers. I found an array of children’s books for kids but they did not focus on chemistry. I noticed a void that I wanted to fill.
Do you have another profession besides writing?
My main profession is being a stay-at-home mom and I love every second of it. Although it is not a paid profession, it is still a full-time job. As a Masters’ student, I taught undergraduate level chemistry labs and I love teaching. Once my daughters are old enough to go to school, I will hopefully go back to teaching, but for the moment I have the best job in the world.
How long have you been writing?
I had my first idea for creating a chemistry alphabet book in 2016 but did not make much progress on it until after my daughter’s first birthday in 2018. I have written scientific papers before but writing children-book level science was way different for me – there was such a big learning curve!
What genre do you write and why?
I write non-fiction children’s books in the category of STEM. I love writing my books because they expose children to many different science concepts and my goal is to get children excited about science. My hope is that my books are so fun to read that kids do not even realize how much they are learning. Introducing science ideas in books help familiarize children to abstract concepts and then they do not seem as obscure when they encounter them in their school’s curriculum.
