You can’t outrun the Registration

Imagine it’s legal to commit one murder in your lifetime? if you Register the victim and accomplish the kill within fourteen days. So when Lynell Mize stands in line to Register the man who abused her as a child, she’s shocked to hear a stranger Register her to be killed. Why would anyone who doesn’t know her squander his one legal murder on her? Desperate to survive the next two weeks, she must find out who wants to kill her and why.

Easier said than done as Lynell soon discovers that multiple strangers have used their Registration on her. Along the way, she reunites with her estranged husband who is determined to dig up a past Lynell prefers to keep buried. With only days left to live, Lynell fights to uncover the truth and survive a destiny not of her choosing.

While speculative fiction isn’t a genre a typically read, it didn’t take any time at all for me to jump on board. I couldn’t stop reading.

Get Ready For This Page-Turning Start

Lynell Mize lives in a society that allows you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to Register to kill a person without it being a crime. After the Registration you have 2 weeks to make this happen. But as she finds herself waiting in line to Register the name of someone who molested her as a child, her heart starts racing. She hears her name. Someone has just Registered her! Someone she doesn’t know. Will she be dead in 14 days?

While I was prepared for the story to take off in one direction, I was quickly surprised by the unexpected twist.  And then before I knew it it took another turn.

Here’s the good news

I love that this is holding my attention and that I keep wanting to know more.

Here’s the sad news

I’m not quite finished reading it, but rest assured that I’ll be back with an update and my final thoughts.

My thanks to the #CamCat publisher and #RockstarBookTour for the ability to take part in this tour and a gifted copy of the book.

Meanwhile, as you wait for my completed review, here is an excerpt to enjoy.

Excerpt

Lynell feels the sun cutting into her skin, a harsh reminder of her own mortality. She rolls forward on her toes and holds her hand up against the sun. The motion puts an old scar on her forearm in her direct line of sight. Her stomach clenches and she steps back into the shade.

Dallas is busier today than on a usual Thursday. The first Thursday of the quarter, April 4th, brings promises of vengeance, clarity, relief, justice, and love.

It’s Registration Day.

Lynell rests against the wall of the building and leans her head back. She flattens her palms against the hot stones, listening to the city’s symphony. Hundreds of feet pound the pavement, and the streets are congested with honking cars and people on the phone.

Across the street, an old man walks out of the large glass door Lynell has been staring at for two hours. He folds a piece of paper and slides it into his back pocket. She wonders whom he just Registered. The odds suggest a wife or loved one in chronic pain, as mercy is the most common reason for using the Registration. But perhaps this man seeks justice. Lynell’s high school history teacher used his Registration on a man who assaulted his daughter and got away with it. No jail time or community service

But with the Registration, he found justice anyway.

Zachary Price may as well find her now and end it. If she was half the person her father had been, she would welcome it. Maybe he would tell her why he Registered her before killing her. Maybe she really deserves this. Daniel probably thinks she does.

Accepting it would be easier than trying to outrun it. She can’t fight it without risking arrest for hurting or killing Price.

The Elysians didn’t create the system and the government didn’t pass laws to allow it for no reason. It’s designed to work. To help natural se- lection keep their world alive and running. To keep the peace and avoid another civil war. The Registration is a compromise most people can agree upon.

And yet, now that Lynell is at the receiving end, she’s fighting it.
