ABOUT THE BOOK
After reckless behavior costs NYPD detective Leigh O’Donnell her job and her marriage, she returns with her four-year-old daughter to her beautiful hometown of Copper Falls, Ohio. Leigh had stayed away for more than a decade—even though her brother and a trio of loving uncles still call it home—because, while the town may seem idyllic, something rotten lies at its core. Three men in town have drowned in what Leigh suspects to be a triple homicide. She hopes that by finding out who killed them, she just might get her life back on course.
Headstrong and intuitive, Leigh isn’t afraid to face a killer, but she has to do more than that to discover the truth about what happened to those men. She must unravel a web of secrets going back generations, and, in doing so, plumb the darkness within herself.
Perfect for fans of Mare of Easttown, this taut debut is a haunting look at how the search for truth often leads back to the most unlikely of places.

When detective Leigh O’Donnell pulls her gun on a fellow officer, she is at a loss as to what caused her reaction. But what NYPD is very clear about is that O’Donnell is suspended from duty. As far as Leigh O’Donnell is concerned, her job and marriage are over since her commanding officer, who is also her husband, has made it clear that there aren’t any second chances.
O’Donnell’s brother, a cop in her hometown, Copper Falls, Ohio, manages to lure her there where he asks for her help solving some possible murders. She is hesitant because of too many memories there, but her options are limited, so she loads up her young daughter and heads to her old family home.
This debut novel felt like a mix of so much. It had suspense, mystery, twists, red herrings, character development, and deeper thoughts to consider.
My Concerns
At times the pacing felt off and it felt like the author was creating a can of vegetable soup: a little of this and that.
Final Thoughts
Now, after the vegetable soup remark, I do have to say I was impressed by Herrera’s writing and ability to add so much and, for the most part, make it all work.
The story is a web of so many spider silks that all weave together into a design that is fresh and interesting.
You will definitely want to add this new author to your watch list.
