My Thoughts

I was immediately excited when I read the blurb that stated:

Enchanting Regency-Era Gothic Romance Intertwined with Inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

I was looking for a suspenseful, somewhat scary story. I didn’t find that. What I ended up with was quite the opposite. Not that that’s bad. It just didn’t have those vibes, so I had to reread. ” . . . intertwined with inspiration from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.”

Each character felt believable and beautifully contributed to pulling this story together. I was immediately interested and kept turning the pages. So all was good. Until it wasn’t quite so good.

The story began to stall.

Yes, I was seeing a romance develop, but the suspense and page-turning slowed.

Yes, some excellent religious, and otherwise, thoughts were being included. But what was once a big concern as the story started, slowed to an interesting crawl.

And Yes, we begin exploring the softer side of some of the characters. But, that’s making the story more vanilla and not the mint chocolate chip I was hoping for.

Earlier, the words gothic novel had me excited. I began imagining the setting and feel: houses like castles, decaying buildings, graveyards, foreboding, danger, suspense. Unfortunately, I found much of these things lacking in Lost in Darkness.

What I did find was an entertaining story that included some interesting characters with inner turmoil. I also discovered a story that caused me to wonder what my reactions would have been.

I also enjoyed realizing how medical knowledge has improved over the last 200 years. Griep’s medical research and writing style of blending everything together seamlessly contributed to an enjoyable read.

My Concerns

The story felt a tad bland. And perhaps that was more about me going in with wrong expectations and desiring it to move at a faster pace.

Final Thoughts

If you go into this with the thoughts of it being more about characters, medicine, romance, things to ponder, and a small amount of suspense, then I would highly recommend Lost in Darkness.

I certainly didn’t have a hard time finishing it and there were lots of great thoughts included throughout.

My thanks to Barbour Publishing for a gifted copy. This in no way changed my review.

Michelle Griep is an author, blogger, and occasional super-hero when her cape is clean.

Dare I be so bold as to call myself an author? Being that I’m one of those freaks who attended poetry workshops instead of summer camp during my formative years, yes, I will. While other teens busied themselves throwing parties when their parents weren’t home, I was the nerd holed up in my room with pen and paper.
