Keep Your Eyes Open

For Possible Lies

This is the type of psychological thriller that I love to run across. Elizabeth Loughlin is a 17-year-old whose father has been in prison for the last 10 years. While many of the details only unravel as the story is told, we assume that her father blames Charlotte Coburn for his being there. And we do know he is asking his daughter Elizabeth to help prove his innocence.

By now, Charlotte Coburn is in her 30s and is a college professor. Like most of us, Elizabeth is anxious to believe her father is innocent, so she creates an opportunity to meet Charlotte. But she calls herself Elle rather than her real name. In meeting Charlotte, she hopes to befriend her and learn something to help her dad get released from prison.

But as Elizabeth (Elle) tries to prove Charlotte has lied about her past, she only becomes more and more confused.

The story goes back and forth between Charlotte and Elizabeth (Elle). It will have you moving in this direction and that as you fly through the pages.

My Thoughts

As I read this book I kept needing to know just a little bit more. One more page. One more chapter.

And though I’d figured out a little bit of the ending, the odds were in my favor since I had frantically guessed all possible endings, there were still many things that I hadn’t worked through.

If you’re anything like me, while scurrying through the pages, I was also worrying that the ending would possibly ruin the whole story. As you know, unfortunately, from time to time that happens. So I’m turning pages, worrying, excited, biting my nails, forgetting meals, and reading well into the wee hours, and . . .

the wild finale was fine! I was left scratching my head. But it was all good!

What Concerned Me

While there may have been a couple of things with one character that may not have exactly added up, I didn’t go back to make sure. I wasn’t going to fret about something fairly small.

What I Liked Most

This story won my interest right out of the gate. (Though I’m fairly sure by now this is obvious.) And if you’ve read my reviews, I’m not one for a book that drags, especially in the beginning.

The characters and settings felt very believable and helped promote a well thought out story. A story that took me from here to there, then U turned and zigzagged back.

Believe me, this is an author that I will remember.

My thanks to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley, and Marin Montgomery for an ARC and the ability to post a review stating my opinion.
