Teamwork At Its Best

Description

There’s Often a Fine Line Between a Criminal and a Saint

Constable Jackson Forge intends to make the world safer, or at least the streets of Victorian London. But that’s Kit Turner’s domain, a swindler who runs a crew that acquires money the old-fashioned way—conning the rich to give to the poor. When a local cab driver goes missing, Jackson is tasked with finding the man, and the only way to do that is by enlisting Kit’s help. If Jackson doesn’t find the cabby, he’ll be fired. If Kit doesn’t help Jackson, he’ll arrest her for thievery. Yet neither of them realize those are the least of their problems.

My Thoughts

After reading Griep’s last book, The House at the End of the Moor, I was anxious to start reading The Thief at Blackfriars Lane. And I wasn’t a bit disappointed. It’s full of adventure, descriptions that are easily imagined, and characters to fall in love with.

When new Constable Jackson Forge shows up for work, his dreams of making his environment safer turn into a nightmare. His actions reminded me more of the Keystone Cops (okay, they were before my time, but I have heard about them), or better yet, Laurel and Hardy. I guess that ages me too, since many won’t have heard of them either. But bless this dear constable’s heart, he is trying so hard to win approval. Yet he can’t seem to win for losing.

Keep reading, things can only get better, or . . . can they? Michelle Griep has created interesting characters, a setting that feels true to the time, and a story that keeps the pages turning.

Our other character of interest is Kit, a streetwise lady who Forge has the pleasure of meeting early in the book. But at that time he is only concerned about righting a wrong. The thought of partnering with her to solve a crime is the furthest thing from his mind.

But with a deadline that has his job on the line, Kit and Jackson find themselves working together to solve a mystery, one that each of them has a special interest in. Both characters add something special to this unique team.

What Concerned Me

Though I now understand the reasoning for the very first part of the story, and even like it now, it didn’t grab my interest. In fact, I wasn’t sure if this would be a story I’d like.

What I Liked Most

After making it through the very first part of the story, it was all good. The characters won me over and the story moved right along.

The historical references and descriptions were so vivid that I could imagine most of the story as it unfolded.

My thanks to Barbour Books for a copy of this book. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
