In this bighearted book, the real story of a young boy with deafness in his ears is aided by his mother and teachers in navigating new school experiences. My Thoughts

Picture book about being deaf

Mickey is a sixth grader who is once again starting at a new school. While other children in the neighborhood are excited and nervous, Mickey is completely used to starting school. He and his mother just take notes to make sure he has what he needs.

We quickly learn that Mikey  is used to new schools because he has different needs than his friends.

The story covers what Mikey’s day is like with the different challenges that he is faced since he was born profoundly deaf. After many visits to doctors they decided on bilateral cochlear implants, though there are still many hurdles for them to get over in order to get to a better place. Mickey can now hear, but that doesn’t mean normally.

The story is about Mickey’s first day of school and what he still needs to be successful.

Concerns

I had a small concerns

  • I would have felt more comfortable if it had just focused on the first day of school rather than the fact that Mickey moves around, which really wasn’t addressed and thus made the title a bit confusing.

Conclusion

Regardless of my concerns, which I mentioned are small, I definitely recommend this story book. Anything that teaches and brings new understanding to disabilities is very important.  Though I hate to use that word, since many with this classification are less disabled than those classified as normal. And that’s a positive statement in their behalf, since I truly admire their attitude and fortitude.

I’m wondering if this wouldn’t be good to address in a chapter book, since I know there is much more to Mickey and Michelle’s story.

I recommend this for classrooms and libraries, and of course individuals.
