Love Among The Wires #1

Synopsis

Can her dreams of independence withstand a dash of love?

Since she was young, Alice McNeil has seen a career as a telegrapher as the best use for her keen and curious mind. Years later, she doesn’t regret her freedom in foregoing marriage, especially when she acquires a coveted position at an important trading firm. But when the company’s ambitious junior director returns to London, things begin to change in ways Alice could never have imagined.

For Douglas Shaw, years of hard work and ingenuity enabled him to escape a life of grinding poverty. He’s now determined to marry into high society–a step that will ensure he never returns to the conditions of his past.

He immediately earns Alice’s respect by judging her based on her skills and not her gender, and a fast camaraderie forms. However, when Alice accidentally angers a jealous coworker and his revenge threatens both their reputations, Alice and Douglas are forced to confront what is truly important in their lives. Will their growing bond give them the courage to see the future in a different light?

My Thoughts

This is the first book in a new series that is sure to win your heart. It starts with a beautiful book cover that introduces a beautiful setting and story.

After all, what’s not to love about the Victorian-era, a bookstore, and a romance? Then sprinkle in some interesting characters.

Alice McNeil is trying to prove that women can succeed in the workplace and that there is no reason for her to be dependant on a man for support. Thus, becoming an independent spinster is quite all right with her.

But what will become of that thinking when Douglas Shaw, who happens to be another telegrapher and her supervisor, steps into her life?

Not only does the reader get to enjoy the developing relationship between these fun characters, but also a guest appearance by Andrew Carnegie.

I loved the fact that the setting of London during the late 1800s was not only exciting to experience the conversations and styles, but also historical information regarding the telegraph’s future.

There is humor, inspiration, and interesting characters, awaiting you when you open the first book in this new series.

What Concerned Me

At times the story progressed a bit slowly.

My Conclusion

I always love to read a story based on historical facts, and this was no exception. The characters are interesting and the setting fun to imagine. And to be honest, I’d never really given much thought to the telegraph and how it might have affected people at that time.

Give this a try. It’s both interesting and informative.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House. I was not required to give a favorable review and all opinions are my own.
