Book Description

The best journey brings you home. Boston, 1849. Shattered by the devastating loss of his wife and children during the Irish famine, Sean Deacey has given up on love and happiness. So when he rescues an infant from an immigrant shipwreck, he gives the orphaned babe to his sister Kathleen and her husband. They raise the boy as their own – until Ailish Sullivan arrives two years later claiming the child is her last living relative and demanding his return. A legal fight ensues, and Sean befriends Ailish, determined to change her mind and keep her from destroying his sister’s family. But when friendship leads to understanding, he is torn between the desires of both families. And as his feelings grow for a woman he knows he should not want and can never have, he faces an agonizing choice – stand with his sister or follow his heart. Award-winning author Pamela Ford explores the bonds of family as she takes readers on an uplifting emotional journey through grief, sacrifice, and the power of forgiveness.

My Thoughts

This is the second in the Out of Ireland series. As with most books in a series, it’s nice to start with book one. But it definitely wasn’t necessary. I had no trouble at all picking up on everything. In fact, it was only when I started writing my review that I stopped to realize this was the second book in a series.

I learned so much about the Irish families who came to America to escape the hardships that their country was experiencing. This story was so enlightening and the historical facts were woven in beautifully. Plus I loved reading the Irish dialog.

Not only is the topic of Irish immigration to the United States explored, but also adoption. And the complications of what could happen if it’s not a legal adoption and the Mother eventually wants the child returned.

As I neared the end of the story I couldn’t imagine how it would end. Or, rather, would it end in a way that would satisfy me. I needed have been concerned. This beautiful story that touched on such things as understanding, forgiveness, love, and trust, managed to cause me to shut the book with a smile on my face.

My thanks to iRead Book Tours and the author for a copy of this book. I was completely free to post my thoughts.

“A sweeping historical love story that hits all the marks.” –Publisher’s Weekly starred review

Your feet will bring you to where your heart is.
Ireland 1846. With Ireland ravaged by famine and England unsympathetic to its plight, Kathleen Deacey faces a devastating choice – leave her country to find work or risk dying there. Despising the English for refusing to help Ireland, she crosses the ocean to support her family and search for her missing fiancé.

But when her voyage goes awry, she must accept help from an English whaling captain, Jack Montgomery, who represents everything she despises – and with whom she is reluctantly falling in love. As Kathleen fights to save her family back in Ireland, she finds herself facing yet another devastating choice – remain loyal to her country or follow her heart.

Award-winning author Pamela Ford captures the anguish of a devastating period in Irish history and delivers a historical saga of hope, loyalty, the strength of the human spirit, and the power of love. With more than a half million copies of her books sold worldwide, she is known for creating stories that are emotional and moving.

twist in her career path and writing her first book. Pam has won
numerous awards including the Booksellers Best, the Laurel Wreath, and a
gold medal IPPY in the Independent Book Publisher Awards. She is a
National Readers’ Choice Awards finalist, a Kindle Book Awards finalist,

Interview

How did you do research for your book?

I started with a lot of searching online and at the library, but eventually I took a trip to Boston and Cohasset. The museums and libraries there offer so much more in-depth history for the area. Plus, I got a first-hand look at Grampus Ledge where the brig St. John went down, the cemetery, and specific areas of Boston, which helps me be confident in the book’s accuracy.

When did you realize you wanted to write novels?

I was a new mother, working part-time as a freelance writer and decided to write a book. That book took eight years earned lots of rejections. So I set about learning the craft – and sold my third book. Fun fact: fifteen years after putting my second book aside, I pulled it out and revised it. That book became book one in the Out of Ireland series: To Ride a White Horse.

What comes first, the plot or the characters?

For me, the plot always comes first. I get kernel of an idea for a plot, and then I decide who would find themselves in that predicament – and why.

In today’s tech-savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

I’m so used to writing on a computer, the words flow straight from my brain and out my fingertips. When I try to write longhand, something gets jammed up. I think it’s because I can type so much faster than I can write.

Where do you write?

Now I write at home at my desk. But prior to the Covid pandemic, I used to spend part of almost every day writing in different coffee shops. The coffee was strong, the energy bubbling, the vibe happy. I’m looking forward to doing it again when we’re on the other side of this nightmare.

What is the last great book you read?

I recently finished the Shades of Magic fantasy trilogy, which I loved. It’s a really creative premise with great characters and wonderful writing. The first book in the series is called A Darker Shade of Magic.

What’s your favorite dessert?

Cookies…I love cookies. I can eat a stack at a time. Give me a glass of milk to dunk them in and I’m happy!
