WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Former Army brat Morgan Albright has finally planted roots in a friendly neighborhood near Baltimore. Her friend and roommate Nina helps her make the mortgage payments, as does Morgan’s job as a bartender. But after she and Nina host their first dinner party―attended by Luke, the flirtatious IT guy who’d been chatting her up at the bar―her carefully built world is shattered. The back door glass is broken, cash and jewelry are missing, her car is gone, and Nina lies dead on the floor.
Soon, a horrific truth emerges: It was Morgan who let the monster in. “Luke” is actually a cold-hearted con artist named Gavin who targets a particular type of woman, steals her assets and identity, and then commits his ultimate goal: murder.
What the FBI tells Morgan is beyond chilling. Nina wasn’t his type. Morgan is. Nina was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. And Morgan’s nightmare is just beginning. Soon she has no choice but to flee to her mother’s home in Vermont. While she struggles to build something new, she meets another man, Miles Jameson. He isn’t flashy or flirtatious, and his family business has deep roots in town. But Gavin is still out there hunting new victims, and he hasn’t forgotten the one who got away.

My Thoughts
This audiobook fell somewhere between a romance novel and a mystery, but sometimes in between doesn’t successfully meet the mark of either genre. When Morgan falls victim to identity theft, and her roommate is murdered, it’s time for a change. She returns to her roots in Vermont, where she temporarily moves in with her grandmother and mother.
Though Morgan is living in a different place, in the back of her mind she has to deal with information the police shared with her before she moved. The man she had been briefly dating is a serial killer and identity thief—and she, not her roommate, had been his intended target. The chance of him attempting to kill her can’t be eliminated.
So that’s where the mystery sits. Will he come for her?
In her new location and working for a family-owned resort is where the romance will begin.
My Yeas and Nays (not in that order)
- I kept wondering if I had been reading the 448-page book, would I be interested enough to continue reading it?
- It felt extremely detailed and at times repetitive.
- Nothing about the story stood out as unique
- The mystery portion was woven throughout, yet not very interesting.
- Being able to guess the ending wasn’t difficult
- Because of the length of the story it provided more opportunities to see character growth.
- The descriptions were well done and helped with the visualization
- The narrator, January LaVoy, did an excellent job.
- It was an easy-going-feel-good-story that revolved around families.
Final Thoughts
Even though LaVoy does an excellent job of using various voices and inflections to bring the story to life, it still takes 15 hours to listen to Identity. I highly suggest listening to this rather than reading it.
There was nothing that made this book stand out as special in either genre. Romantic-suspense? Not-so-much. Enjoyable? Sure.
