Interview
How did you do research for your book?Â
The research for this book actually started about 40 years ago before there was an internet for the average everyday person to peruse. I used a dictionary and an incomplete set of hard back encyclopedias to track down as much information as I could find about metals. The original research was for my book, The Blue Unicorn’s Journey To Osm, a story about a tribe of metal horn unicorns plus one who had no metal. Twelve of the elemental unicorn characters in Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal Horn Unicorns are from that book.
What made you write an alphabetical periodic table book?Â
I always wanted to write an alphabet book. This book took on a life of its own and became something way beyond a simple recitation of the alphabet when I decided to use elements from the periodic table to represent different letters of the alphabet.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?Â
My original inspiration to write about metal horned unicorns came from my love of the sentient unicorn books by Piers Anthony back in the 70’s. I decided, back then, to create my own unicorn story but with unicorns with magic powers based on the properties of the metals of their horns and hooves. The research for those characters has been on-going throughout my life. I was never all that great of a student in junior high and high school and I never went to college but my love of learning has continued to explode as I learn more about the elements that make up our world and the amazing technology that is generated from them.
Your collection of unicorn books are set in MarBryn. Do you ever wish you could visit?
Yes! I’d love to know how the population is doing now that the metal horns have left and gone back to their home world of Unimaise.Â
Do you have another profession besides writing?Â
Oh yes and I hope to continue it for a few more years. My day job is at an analyzer company. My daily thought processes there are completely different from those when I’m in writing and marketing mode. I think it’s a very good balance for my brain.
Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?Â
Yes, writer’s block happens to everyone. In fact, about 30 years ago I realized that it was such a problem for me that I started compiling and categorizing phrases in order to help me and others overcome writer’s block. It turned out to be a 4 volume set of books called Sybrina’s Phrase Thesaurus that’s fun to read and pushes you through that wall that’s blocking your writing efforts after a just few minutes of reading. It’s also a great book for people just learning the English language because it gives them many different ways to say things.Â
Your latest middle grade book, Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically by the Metal Horn Unicorns is packed full of information. Have you come up with any activities for students to use to make it easier to absorb the amazing content?
As I was writing the book I realized that it is a wonderful basis for lessons and activities. I’ve actually developed several. So far, there’s Unicorn Periodic Table Bingo, Unicorn Periodic Table Trading Cards and my favorite, Create Your Own Unicorn Elemental. They are all available from my website, https://www.sybrina.com/muapt .
