My Thoughts
If you’re a fan of a mysteries with a bit of romance, then you’ll no doubt want to check out this first book in Goddard’s new series Rocky Mountain Courage.
We have a helicopter crash, a former FBI Agent who has returned to his home town to work as a detective, and his former girlfriend who is working there as a US Forest Service Special Agent. A local man is killed. And the man who survived the helicopter crash disappears from the hospital.
So how’s that for a start. Oops. Did I forget to mention that Jack, the detective is teamed together with Terra, his former girlfriend to try to put the puzzle pieces together and solve the mysteries?
Though Jack and Terra’s romance was cut short when he left the area several years earlier, being forced to work together on this mystery makes them realize that they still have feelings for each other. They both soon discover that all isn’t quite what it seems with the local man who turned up dead. It begins to look like artifacts might be a big part of both the helicopter crash and the man’s death. But it’s far too early to know for sure.
What Concerned Me
Several things concerned me after finishing the book.
- I really had trouble having much empathy or caring too much for the characters. And if Jack and Terra had romantic feelings for each other, they didn’t convey that to me. Yes, they cared about each other and didn’t want the other harmed. And yes, they starred at each other, which I’m sure was to convey feelings. But for me, I didn’t feel any real vibes between the two.
- Now, for the mystery, it was fine. I didn’t have to struggle to turn the pages since it was interesting. That is until I got to the last where everything quickly started wrapping up into a neat little bow. In this case, it felt like characters poured out of the ribbon box to be a part of the neatly tied bow. It all happened too quickly and felt pretty hard to believe.
My Final Thoughts
After I write my review I usually sneak a peak at other reviews to see if we agree on anything. I would say in this case, what concerned me didn’t bother most readers. So I would definitely recommend that you give this new series a try.
A review copy was provided by the publisher but I was able to freely post my opinion.
