Book Description
When Jordy discovers a magic wand, he learns he can do just that. Whenever he wants some peace and quiet, all he has to do is say “ABRACADABRA WHOOPSIE,” and . . .POOF! His little sister Keeka vanishes. When he’s ready for her to come back, he simply says it reversed: “WHOOPSIE ABRACADABRA.” What could possibly go wrong?

My Thoughts
Looking for a magical way to teach siblings to appreciate each other. This is it. The illustrations are colorful and the story should easily capture a child’s interest.
Like many siblings, Jordy sometimes grows tired of having a little sister bother his things. So when he’s visited one night by Perziluzo, he’s given a magic wand to take care of his little sister problems. With the wand he can cast a spell to make her disappear. Then when he’s ready he can reverse the spell and she will reappear. Problem solved, right? Maybe not. A bigger problem arises that causes Jordy to rethink things a bit.
This is a fun book that will help kids realize they aren’t alone with their sibling problems. But they will also discover that there are two sides to their troubles.

Meet the Author:

Advice to Budding Writers – by Adam Kargman
First rule: write for yourself. Don’t try to second guess what agents, publishers, or readers might like. If you’re writing about something that you’re truly passionate about it, that you love and think is important, there will be readers out there who you’ll connect with. Furthermore, the journey to publication is a long one – at least a year for a children’s picture book, longer for a novel. You’ll encounter many setbacks along the way. You’re more likely to stick with it and be successful if you’re driven by a story that you’re truly passionate about it. For me, Abracadabra Whoopsie – which is about a little boy who is given the power to make his baby sister disappear whenever he wants – had lots of hilarious possibilities. Plus, it was inspired by the real-life sibling rivalry of my son and daughter, so I had plenty of firsthand experience that I could draw from. For those reasons, I knew I would enjoy writing it.
Second, you need to read voraciously, particularly in the genre/book category in which you’re writing. In my case, I had been consistently reading picture books nightly to my son and daughter before attempting to write one.
Third, if you’re writing fiction, particularly novels or short stories, I would recommend taking a good acting class. There’s a long list of actors who are also great novelists, screenwriters, and short story writers. Acting teaches you how to think of characters in terms of motivation, which is the key to creating believable characters and dialogue.
Finally, while you don’t need to obsess about perfect grammar, I would highly recommend reading Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style. It elegantly conveys the principles of plain English in less than 100 pages. I think writers of all skill levels would benefit from periodically reviewing it.
