My Thoughts
Nurse Mommy is a fun, well-illustrated story about a toddler who is confused and sad when his Mommy leaves each evening. As his daddy dries his son’s tears, he explains where his mommy goes and what she does.
This is a perfect book for showing what a nurse does and even more importantly to the little boy in this story, his mom. This is also a great tool for opening discussions about other professions.
As Dad explains what Mom does most nights, he’s always quick to make sure his son realizes that Nurse Mommy loves taking care of her little boy most of all. She can’t wait for her shift to end so she can return home to him, but in the mean time Dad will be the one loving him and tucking him in bed.
The story told in rhyme and supported by colorful illustrations will serve many purposes in teaching and opening discussions. I also liked that the author included that it’s absolutely okay to be sad when Mom leaves. But he needs to realize what she’s doing and that she loves him.
Thumbs-up. Nicely written and illustrated.
My thanks to the author and IRead Book Tours for a copy of the book, the ability to be included in this tour, and allowed to post a review without stipulations.

Meet the Author and Interview
Kristyn Boland lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband, Tim, her son, Owen, and their dog, Bo. She graduated from East Carolina University College of Nursing in 2014. Kristyn started her career working in Pediatric Intensive Care and later moved to Postpartum Care, where she takes care of moms and their new babies in the
hospital. When she returned to work after having her son, she wanted to find a book for her husband to read to her son at bedtime explaining where she was and why she went to work at night. When she couldn’t find one, she decided to write it herself!
- What is your favorite part about Nurse Mommy?
I love that family in the book is actually based on a picture of my husband, son, dog, and myself. The illustrator did such a good job that when my son first saw the book he looked at one picture and said “Mommy, Daddy, Bo!” The only one missing is our new baby girl, but we didn’t even know about her when all of this went into production!
- So the dad in the book is based on your husband-what are his thoughts on the book?
He absolutely loved the idea of having a special story to read to our son on nights I had to work. When I first told him about my idea and read him some of what I had written, he told me I had to finish it and get it published!
- There are many books out there about nurses, what makes yours different?
This book is specific to night shift nurses, which I love because there are so many of us but somehow there was no book I could find specifically about us!
- Do you see yourself writing more books in the future?
I’m not sure! I never imagined that I would write a children’s book, but I was so excited about the idea of Nurse Mommy that I felt like I needed to make it happen. If I have another idea that I get excited about I may try again!
- What surprised you the most about writing your first book?
I think I was surprised by how easy it was to write. I’m not a writer by trade, I’ve been a nurse for almost 7 years. But when I thought about what story I would want to tell my son the words practically wrote themselves.
