Mystery book cover Bury The Lead

Did He . . . Or Did He Not?

My Thoughts

When a body is discovered near a popular ski trail, Joe Gunther and his team at the Vermont Bureau of Investigation quickly locate a prime suspect, Mick Durocher, thanks to a security camera. Mick, a small-time crook, was caught on the footage disposing of the woman’s body. But there is one problem. Durocher confesses almost too quickly, with only partial details.

In Mayor’s 29th Joe Gunther novel, the story seems to head several directions. Mick Durocher confesses that he hit the victim with a two-by-four in a drunken quarrel, but his story doesn’t hold up. Meanwhile, arson strikes a business where Durocher, the confessed murderer, was once employed, and Willy Kunkle, a member of Vermont Bureau of Investigation, undergoes surgery at a hospital that has a suspicious outbreak of Ebola.

Sound like a lot to keep track of? Could be . . .

What Concerned Me

While this is a very good novel, my favorites tend to be the ones that catch my attention almost immediately. This one took a bit to draw me in.

Also, it has quite a few subplots. I felt sure everything would come together, but. . . well, some may feel overwhelmed. I have to admit there were times I did, but I kept plodding on, and it all came together.

My Conclusion

Though this is the first book I’ve read in this series, the characters are introduced in such a way that I didn’t ever feel lost. As with any series, however, if you want the most out of it it’s probably best to start at the beginning.

About the Author
Many writers base their books only on interviews and research. Not Archer Mayor. He is an author whose novels are based on actual field experience. Currently a medico-legal death investigator for Vermont’s chief medical examiner, he is also a former detective, EMT, and firefighter — Mayor’s knowledge is up close and very personal. His novels stem from decades on the job.
