MUTTS is a photographic celebration of mystery mixed breeds. If you’ve ever loved a bonafide mutt, you know that they’re some of the best, most loyal dogs ever.
MUTTS features more than 100 really cute pups from all different origins and breeds, photographed by Olivia Grey Pritchard. Each photo is accompanied by the pooch’s name and best guess of breed mix, and list a unique trait about them. MUTTS aims to inspire joy and connection when readers look through these photographs. And for people who haven’t considered adopting a rescue pet before, this book shows that mutts have just as many unique, lovable, and desirable qualities as pedigreed dogs. Olivia has owned mutts her whole life—from a border collie mix named Spike that her mom found as a puppy trying to get milk out of a carton and a husky mix named Wylie who met the school bus every afternoon, to the most loyal hound / shepherd mix named Chester who loved to sun himself in a certain spot in the front yard. So it’s no surprise that as an adult, she has a 120 pound St. Bernard / retriever / shepherd rescue named Jasper—the most patient, protective, devoted dog ever.
Her mission with this book is to call attention to the heartbreaking and chilling fact that according the ASPCA, over half a million dogs are euthanized in US shelters each year, and to encourage more rescue adoptions. In addition to hopefully fostering more love for mutts, a portion of the proceeds from the book are being donated to organizations that rescue and spay/neuter, including Take Paws Rescue, Animal Rescue New Orleans, Zeus’ Place, Greta’s Ark Animal Rescue, Trampled Rose Rescue, and the LASPCA.
Some animals just beg to be photographed.
Mutts is a large book with beautiful images of all types of dogs and a short introduction to each. As the book notes on the cover, it is A Celebration of Mystery Mixed Breeds.
On one side of the opened book is a picture of the huggable mutt, and on the opposite side are the dog’s name and best guess of breed mix, as well as one fun, interesting trait about the dog.
I’m sure the author had various reasons for creating this well-constructed book that screams to find a place on your coffee table, but in her Introduction, she mentions an important fact:
Approximately 670,000 dogs are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year (ASPCA). So, in addition to fostering more love for mutts, a portion of the proceeds from this book will be donated to organizations who rescue and spay/neuter, locally that include Take Paws Rescue, Animal Rescue New Orleans, Zeus’ Place, Greta’s Ark Animal Rescue, Trampled Rose Rescue and the LASPCA.
Introduction, page 5
These pages celebrate mutts with gorgeous pictures of man’s best friend. Or in today’s world, we might say everyone’s best friend.
WARNING:
Be prepared to run out and adopt a special mutt after viewing these pages.
My Concerns
I would love to have seen more information about each dog. For example, when the guessed breed of each dog is listed, I wish there had been a small picture of those pure breeds so that I could have compared them with the “mutt.”
As it stands, it’s a lovely book but full of lots of white space.
Final Thoughts
This is a large, beautifully constructed book that should appeal to all dog lovers. Even the endpaper was well thought out. As I shut the book I still had cute dogs on my mind.
My thanks to booksforwardpr and the publisher for a copy of this book and the ability to post my thoughts without any stipulations.
