Exhale is the riveting memoir of a top transplant doctor who rode the
emotional rollercoaster of saving and losing lives—until it was time
to step back and reassess his own life.

I would definitely suffer from a severe case of the heebie-jeebies if I had to perform as either a nurse or doctor, so I’ve always highly respected both. At the same time, I’ve been fascinated and always gravitated toward medical information and learning, even watching operations and procedures on TV. I find myself reading both non-fiction and fictional books related to the medical field. I love it all. That’s why I couldn’t wait to read Exhale: Hope, Healing and a Life in Transplant by David Weill, MD.
This captivating memoir opened yet another door for me. Weill took me on a journey that was different from any other story I’d experienced. From struggling as an intern to taking calls in the middle of the night alerting him that lungs had become available for one of his patients. Dr. Weills also included information on the team required to execute this life and death procedure. And, of course, patient’s stories also find their way into the book.
It’s all included. Yet, it isn’t. There is so much involved in matching a patient with a donor. Of deciding who qualifies to be on the list. It is a story that opens many doors that didn’t feel completely explored. Especially for curious minds. Yet, I understand the line had to be drawn somewhere.
For people like me, who are curious, I would have loved it to contain a deeper understanding of procuring and choosing who receives lungs. But given my desires, where would an author ever stop sharing? I get it.Â
If you’re looking for a well-written medical memoir, this is the book. I highly recommend it.
My thanks to RABT Book Tours and the author for an ARC and the ability to post my thoughts regarding this book.
