Christmas In Idaho is elegantly constructed with thick pages and a beautiful binding that will last for years to come.
If you read my reviews, you know that I rarely, if ever, go into detail about the physical book itself. But this book’s beauty had to be included. With these close-ups, you can see that the gilded pages and ribbon bookmark add a beautiful accent that can’t be ignored.
As I rubbed my fingers across the cover I confirmed the fact that some of the images were slightly raised, or embossed. The beautiful additions to this book, such as the faux leather cover, truly make it stand out.
As far as the story goes, I felt it could easily work itself into a memorable Christmas tradition. I liked the fact that the short chapters offered places to drape the bookmark and stop for family discussions. I didn’t see the text as straightforward but more designed to bring about thinking and talking points.
For these reasons, and the occasional vocabulary words that younger children probably won’t be familiar with, your little family members will not absorb as much from the book as older children and adults. However, the pictures, and being able to listen to the wonderfully narrated story on the CD, should still make it meaningful. Especially, if they listen to family discussions on various topics.
Why this book? Though I’ve given my reasons, I was interested in what author Ray Downing might give for writing it. Among other things he stated, “Because Jesus needs to be back at the center of the celebration.” And that’s an excellent answer as far as I’m concerned. If you’re interested in his full list of reasons check his reply here.
I can think of no better way of closing my review than with these YouTube videos. I hope you enjoy them.
Though this book was gifted to me, it has not influenced my review, which of course is just my opinion.
Rating: 4 Stars ☆☆☆☆ due to the book’s quality and the story’s ability to promote deeper thinking.
