Ready for a Fun Story with a
Dash of Romance and a
Pinch of Humor?
This Is The Book!
I certainly enjoyed the wit, humor, and character development that this book offered. It was just what I needed.
Celebrity Chef Maxwell Cavanagh has the top-rated show on the Culinary Channel: To the Max. But that’s not all he’s known for, unfortunately, he has a temper and a drinking problem too.
Hadley Beckett is working very hard to grow her show, At Home With Hadley. She is known and loved for her Southern charm and goodness.

So what happens when these two opposites are paired together on a culinary cook-off show? Yep, you guessed it. It’s not very pretty. And that is the opening chapter in Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish.
There may or may not be a temper tantrum that is both appalling and funny in that first chapter. How can it be both? I guess it depends on whether you’re reading about it or experiencing it. But it only took one chapter to cause me to start turning pages, and reading long into the night.
Though I don’t watch the cooking channels on TV, I have seen enough advertisements to know that those who are fans, will definitely feel at home with this story. Not only are there elements related to cooking, but the story also covers show ratings and agents who represent celebrities.

When these two opposites end up sharing a show for two months, we begin learning a bit of backstory regarding the two chefs. At times when I questioned Hadley’s behavior, it helped to remember where her reactions and thinking might have stemmed from.
This is my first book by author Bethany Turner, but I can assure you it most definitely won’t be my last.

My Thoughts
If you’re looking for a fun book, yet one that also manages to weave a quiet, subtly lesson of change and forgiveness, then, by all means, read this book. If you aren’t looking for a preachy book regarding forgiveness and change, this is the book. Did you pick up my consistent message? This is the book.
While I hesitantly admit this, I used to stray away from Christian Fiction, not because I’m not a Christian, but because the one book I read felt like the Christian element was forced. Folks, the books I’ve been reading lately aren’t that way. Yes, some may have a little more of the churchy element than others, but it’s not disruptive to the story. In fact, I’m finding the more I’m reading this type of book, the more intolerant I am of books with objectionable behavior and language. Okay, the point being, if you find yourself like I once was, you still might give this book a try.
What Concerned Me
In all honesty, there were a few times that Hadley’s behavior felt over-the-top sensitive. Yet after reading more about her, it probably was just fine.
What I Liked Most
Since there are several things, I think it will be easier if I just post a list.
- I liked that each character felt real, warts and all.
- The characters’ self-reflection and growth were believable.
- There was just the right amount of humor.
- I loved that Hadley had to question her feminist views. Yippee!! (I’m confused by some of the thinking too, Hadley.)
- Just the right amount of lightness and nothing didactic.
- A wonderful tale of opposites and second chances.
