My Thoughts

I would label this audiobook as MG, YA, and adults since I found it to be interesting and fun too.

Grady Whill and his sidekick are ordinary people trying to accomplish an ordinary goal, going to the same school. But this school is non-ordinary. Templeton Academy has just opened up. No one knows exactly what it’s all about except that it accepts only very special people and it’s for superheroes. But Grady and his friend have a challenge. They are a long way from superheroes.

I had no trouble following this captivating story. It held my interest and Roman seamlessly wove into her story tidbits of wisdom. Yet, they didn’t stand in an obtrusive way.

The characters are believable, with challenges that most readers can relate to.

This is a twist to the typical superhero story that should appeal to most.

My Concerns

My only concern was when I thought it was for MG and I wondered if most would understand the underlying message and parts of the plot. After some consideration, I absolutely think most will, so I still recommend it for middle-grade readers/listeners. However, when I saw it was for YA, I had no real concerns. I honestly, think it falls somewhere between both.

Final Thoughts

This is an absolute yes. The narration brought the story to life and I enjoyed listening to it while I worked around the house. The deeper message, of course, worked for me, since kids too easily can feel inferior.

While the book ended, to a degree that satisfied me, it’s obvious that it opens up to a series.

I would rate both the narration and plot:

My thanks to the author and iRead Book Tours for the opportunity to listen to a gifted audiobook and share my opinion.

Interview

1- What made you write a book about superheroes?

I come from a family of authors. Grady Whill was actually a character my son came up with. He wanted to name the novel Whillpower and write about superheroes. My younger son suggested it should be in a school setting. I asked if they minded if I took the idea and write the book. He moved on to something else, and I took Grady, gave him asthma, created an autistic best friend, and went on an adventure of a lifetime with them.

2-Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

Every day I meet with my sons, and we kick around ideas for storylines. We serve as each other’s beta readers as well as inspirations.  Writing Grady brought back the smell of gym locker, sweaty socks, and everything else associated with being the mom of teenage boys.

3- There are many books out there about superheroes. What makes yours different?

I loved writing this book. Grady speaks in his voice, and I think people will identify with him. I know I did. It’s fun, exciting, and sprinkled with humor. Most of Grady’s friends have challenges of sorts that give a realistic feeling to an impossible fantasy.

4- Your book is set in Middlebury and an island off the coast of Miami. Have you ever been there?

Only in my imagination. Middlebury is like the Simpson’s Springfield. It could be anywhere in this country. Both Middlebury and the island are inventions of my imagination.

5- In your book you state “Do not fear failure. Failure makes us stronger. Failure makes us smarter. Failure is good.” Why is that?

We teach children to fear failure. They must learn that it’s only through trial and error that we can become successful. Each failure leads us closer to success.

6- What is your next project?

I am working on three picture books. Grady is calling me back to the keyboard. I’ve written the first chapter, but marketing and promotion have kept me too busy to concentrate.

Thanks so much, Carole for these insights into the story and for the opportunity to get to know you a little better.
