A Rollercoaster Of Twists And Turns

ABOUT THE AUDIO BOOK

Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime.

To avoid spending her life in prison, Quinn makes a run for it. She leaves behind her home, her job, and her family. She grabs her passport and heads for the northern border before the police can discover what she’s done.

But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night.

Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn’t the quiet safe haven it seemed to be. The motel has a dark and disturbing past. And in the dilapidated house across the way, the silhouette of Nick’s ailing wife is always at the window. Always watching.

In the morning, Quinn must leave the motel. She’ll pack up her belongings and get back on the road to freedom.

But first, she must survive the night.

My Thoughts

The story starts out quickly with Quinn on the run after killing her husband. But it’s not long before her escape is slowed and eventually stopped by a blizzard. Unfortunately, her day isn’t getting any better. The only shelter she sees is a run-down hotel that has seen better days. She quickly debates her options, but with the blizzard getting worse, she realizes there are no real options. Freeze to death in the car or see if she can survive the night in this run-down building?

The Baxter Hotel is going to have to work for her.

The eerie Baxter Hotel had me listening to the story every chance I could. Though there weren’t many characters, they were unique and interesting. Who could be trusted? Would this stop be Quinn’s last?

This audiobook started out quickly. Had me guessing. Threw in an interesting character who was residing in the hotel, added some twists and surprises, and had good narrators. It was well on the way to a five-star rating. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite make it to the finish line for me.

My Concerns

With a few changes, this would have worked for me. But twists and turns have to be fair to the reader. And though this made for an interesting story, the twists and ending felt contrived, pretty much out-of-the-blue, and not substantiated.

Final Thoughts

McFadden did a wonderful job of building suspense and creating an atmosphere that added greatly to the story. Her writing style easily captured my interest.

If you’re okay with not overthinking the story and are willing to just listen and be okay with twists and turns, you won’t be disappointed.

I will definitely be watching for McFadden’s new releases.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
